You will also see it listed sometimes as “espanol ultramarino” literally translated as Spaniard born abroad.
This group, who was actually considered a lower caste than the “peninsulares” or Spaniards born in Spain, was instrumental in the movement for Mexican independence. They resented that they did not have as much privilege as those born in Spain even if they were 100% of European stock.
