Hi,
Hijos legítimos would be the children of a married couple.
Hijos ilegítimos and hijos naturales, would be the children of a single parent or an unmarried couple. I’m not sure if there’e a difference between ilegítimos and naturales.
In any case, those labels are not used in official documents any more, children are just children, not legítimos, ilegítimos or naturales.

I have an interesting story to tell in regards to this practice which was, apparently, still in effect in 1977!

My mother says that when my grandfather (R.i.P) and my great-grandmother went to register me in Tlaltenango, Zacatecas (I think my dad was here in California at the time.), the clerk ask my grandfather if I was an “hija natural” and he said “Yes.” So, when my mom saw the certificate that said proclaimed me so, she was taken aback and asked why he had said that. “My daughter has a father!” she exclaimed. My grandfather explained that he thought the clerk was asking if my mom had given birth the “natural” way.

I thought this was very funny…
