My name is Daniel Briones,

I have a Francisco Cabeza de Vaca married to a Josefa Lopez in Ixtlan, Michoacan. I was wondering if you think that these Cabeza de Vacas are possibly related?

Thanks,

Daniel Briones

While researching my Vaca line I have found that I too am a descendant of Francisco Cabesa de Baca and Lugarda Cuevas. I am a descendant of theirs through their son Miguel Vaca who married Dolores Ochoa in Ixtlan in 1822.

Rafael, Francisco Cabesa de Baca and Lugarda Cuevas are my direct
descendants; I do need to get confirmation for Rosendo Vaca who married my
gggrandmother, Anastacia Velasquez. All I have is that he was killed before
my ggrandmother Maria Guadalupe Vaca Velasquez was born. I have an original
birth certificate for my ggrandmother and it has all these names that
connect them.
Does that mean we are cousins?

Yes, we are distant cousins. Have you found Francisco Cabesa de Baca and Lugarda Cuevas marriage ?
I have looked for it in the date given but could not find it. I have a photo of my 2nd Great grandmother Maria Vaca Verduzco.

I have a Jose Miguel Salome Cabeza de Vaca baptized in San Agustin, Jacona de Plancarte, Michoacan
on 7 Jul 1799 parents are Francisco Cabeza de Vaca and Lugarda Cuevas.

They also had Jose Rafael Cabeza de Vaca baptized in San Francisco, Tamazula de Gordiano, Jalisco
on 11 Jan 1796. They married 12 Feb 1781 San Francisco de Asis, Ixtlan, Michoacan, Mexico.

How far have you traced it? They might very well be from Zamora, Michoacan, where my paternal family
lived for two centuries.

The Cabeza de Vaca were a prominant family in Zamora, Michoacan as early as the beginning of
the XVII century. By birth they were and are today hijosdalgo. A family lore that I was told was
the King of Castilla, I believe it was it was one of the Alfonsos in the XIII century were traveling on a path.
So to not get lost the king commanded the man to kill the cow and remove the head and set it on the path.
During the reconquista the family became hijosdalgos and took on the name Cabeza de Vaca. Similar stories like those
of the Vargas Machuca family.

Hello Daniel,

The surname was granted to Martín Alhaja, a shephard, who aided the
Castilian King Alfonso VIII during the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212
A.D. Alhaja, who knew the area, placed a cow skull on the road that led to
the battlefield, an unguarded pass in the Sierra Moreno. The Spanish
Christian King surprised the Moorish army and defeated them. This was the
first significant victory for the Christian Spanish during their reconquest
of Spain. He was awarded a coat-of-arms that included a cow skulls in its
design.

Rafael, I don’t have photos scanned I can share with you at this time but
hope to have my scanner working soon and I can share a picture or two of my
great grandmother. And if you have your ggrandmother’s scanned picture will
you email it to me?

I guess I had better start working more on that line. I do remember my
grandmother, Librada Vaca de Gutierrez, used to go to Michoacan often.
There were family members living there. I was just 5 years old at the time
so I don’t remember all the stuff I used to hear from her. So Daniel, you
may have just found our ancestor.
