Ojala alguien pueda orientarme o contribuir a mi investigación.

Gracias de antemano.

Alessandro, (both your first and last names are Italian),

Welcome to the group. I don’t speak or write Spanish well, so I hope you can help me understand the statement you made: “se que Zacatecas es uno de los estados mas golpeados y dañados sus archivos por los cristeros, muchos de ellos acabaron en el fuego y perdiendose la información”.

My father was from Jerez, Zacatecas, and he had some surnames in his lines that were Italian (not Vitela). I can’t even find a record of his birth in 1903 or his sisters birth in 1898 or a record of the marriage of his parents. Like you said, I think you said, the records only go back from 1860? More recent records from 1860 to 1913 seem to be missing. A priest told my father that the records in his church were burned during the Revolution.

What happened? Who were the cristeros, and why did they burn the records? I thought the records were burned by the Revolutionaries who were against the Church and the Government, and I thought the cristeros were on the side of the priests and the church records.

Thanks for writing back. What I can tell you about the burned records in zacates is that exactly that happened based on the revolution. You are right saying that the cristeros were on the church side, I expressed myself wrong, I should have said instead “LA Cristeada” which evoques the cristeros accions on the church’s side against the government regulations. The main problen then, was the new regulations based on the revolutions took the authority and properties of the church. Besides, it restricted the “free- public cult” and that is why the soldiers (governnment) burned many records as an imposition of the new regulations. Priests had to hide and were under persecution, when found were murdered and their records burned (some of them as martirs).

By the way, which italian family are you looking for in Jalpa?

Alessandro,

Thank you for the explanation.

The ancestors of my father that I think were Italian (not in Jalpa, but in Zacatecas, where my father was born) were Suriano and Lucio.

Hello all.

I’m finally getting around to introducing myself and the beginnings of my family research:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/17213

It’s very exciting to see how far some have been able to take their histories.  Although I’m just getting started in my research,  I hope that at some point, something I’ve found out will help someone else.

Happy hunting,
Rebecca

My name is Mike Gordoa Jr. and I am seeking the family of my father, Miguel Gordoa Acosta. My father was born 29 September 1908 in the vicinity of the Hacienda Pasjae near Pedricenas, Durango (from baptismal record ). He was the son of Alfredo Gordoa and Juana Acosta. My grandmother, Juana Acosta, was born in la Punta, Aguascaliente and I have traced her genealogy back to her grandfather`s family in la Punta ( near Rincon de Romos, Agus. ).
What I know about my Grandfather Gordoa is that he was a mining engineer and was killed in a mining accident in the Cuencame area of Durango in the year 1910. His parents were Miguel Gordoa and Tomasa Mata.I have searched for answers via the FHC and Gordoa`s from Spain and Mexico who helped and encouraged me on my quest to find the family of my grandfather Gordoa.I have found no records of my grandfather`s death or the baptism of my two aunts,Tomasa and Emilia born in 1906 and 1910.My grandmother with her 3 children crossed into the USA at Eagle Pass, Texas on 23 December 1910.
The first Gordoa from Spain was Francisco Ignacio Gordoa who came to Oaxaca about 1740. He married a Peruivan lady named Justa Lorenza de Loaeza on 27 April 1753 in Jerez de Oaxaca. They had 7 children and the family story is well documented. Two sons migrated to central mexico and made their fortunes in agriculture and mining. I believe that my Grandfather belongs to the branch of Juan Francisco Gordoa who settled in Pinos, Zacatecas and married Mariana de Barrios. They had 12 children, 4 of which were priests, and one became the first mexican bishop of Guadalahara. His name was Doctor Don Jose Miguel Gordoa y Barrios.Juan Gordoa`s second marriage was to Maria Luiza Flores de Moyeda in Pinos on 4 october 1792. They had 4 children that I have baptismal records. One of their children, Jose Miguel Benito Gordoa was baptised in Pinos on 26 December 1797 and married Felipa Diaz de Leon ( no record ). They had at least 6 children that I know. I have baptismal records for all but tw
o.
One son, Juan Nepomuceno Gordoa was baptised in San Luis Potosi, SLP on 26 August 1829. He married Flavia Montes ( no records ). This information was told to me by a lady who is writing a book on the Gordoa Family. Juan N. and Flavia had 9 children that I have baptismal records. The first child was baptised in Lagos de Moreno in 7 September 1861. Her name was Maria Donaciana Gordoa Montes.
Her baptismal record said she lived in San Teresa, Jalisco. This was the last record of the Gordoa`s at the church in Lagos de Moreno.
I pickup the trail for the family of Juan N. again at a church in Leon, Guanajuato. The remainder of the 8 children were baptised there. Two of the sons were : Pedro Miguel de la Santisma Trinidad baptised 30 April 1863
Miguel Octaviano Merced de la Trinidad baptised 23 March 1865
Miguel Octaviano is the strongest candidate to be my long lost grandfather. He could have gone to college and married my grandmother before the eldest sister of my father was born in 1906 in Mexico. There is a Rancho San Jose de Gordoa which is part of the town of Santa Teresa. The lady writing the book told me that Juan N. lived there. This rancho is close to Lagos de Moreno, Jal. and Leon, Gto.
Many of our members are from this area or have family in this area.I need your help.I am at a deadend.Does anyone know of the Gordoa family of this area? If the ranch still belongs to the Gordoa family, I would be willing to make a trip there.I have been searching for my family roots for nearly 10 years.I have traced the family of Fracisco Ignacio Gordoa back to Zalduendo, Basque Province of Alava,Spain to the late 1500`s But I don1t know how I connect to the Gordoa family of Mexico. Thanks in advance for whatever help can be provided. I know this group represents a wealth of expertise and information. I have learned a great deal from all of you. I should have asked for your help long ago.I apologize if my plea is long winded but wanted to share what I know.

Mike Gordoa Jr.

I have just started researching my father’s family who settled in
Bakersfield, CA after coming here around the years 1915-1920. His mother was Ysabel
Munoz from Aguascalientes. The surnames connected to her are: Munoz, Esparza,
Soria, Naranjo, Canales, Martinez, Trevino, Renteria, Sepulveda and Garcia.
His father was Jesus Mora from Encarnacion de Diaz, Jalisco. For now, I am
concentrating on my Grandfather’s family. The surnames connected to his family
are: Mora, Jaime/Jayme/Xayme, Moran, Pedroza, Alba, Romo, Lopez, Cueva,
Villalobos, Delgado, Tiscareno, de Lizaldi (Elisalde?), Esparza and Gabay. I
have already found 2 distant relatives through this site who have been VERY
helpful. Thank you, Luis and Daniel!
I am currently going over the films from Encarnacion de Diaz for the years
1860-1890 trying to find the birth and marriage records for my paternal
grandparents, Sabina Jaime and Narciso Mora. I have found Narciso’s information,
but not Sabina’s. Her birth year is anywhere from 1868 to 1871. There are
about 20 years between Sabina and her sister, Norberta and I have been unable to
find any other siblings. Also, Narciso’s marriage records names “Higinia
Muniz”. There is a child for them born in 1888 but the next child born in 1889
lists Sabina as the mother. So I am also searching for a death record for
Higinia. What is confusing is that Higinia’s parents raised Sabina’s father,
Jose Refugio Jaime.
I would also like to search confirmation records. Does anyone know at what
age confirmation usually took place during that time period in Mexico? Is it
about 13 or 14 like now in the US?
Thank you for providing this opportunity to help each other connect to our
roots.
Sherri
(What is correct: Sherri Bass-Mora or Sherri Mora de Bass?)

Hello KanakaLele,

I have documented a number of confirmations in the 1930’s in
Aguascalientes that were recorded at 1 to 3 years of age, and one that
was recorded 5 days after the christening or 19 days after birth.

Stuart,

Confirmations were oftentimes at the same time as baptisms but could also be every 3 or 4 years, depending on when the Bishop could make it to your parish. Sometimes the Confirmandi had to go to another parish rather than wait several years for the Bishop to visit the home parish.

It was not like it is here at a set age.

San Jose, Calif

The 1844 confirmations for Yahualica, Jalisco, lasted days and included well
over a thousand. It looks to me like anyone and everyone of all ages from
the parish got confirmed.

Jonathan,
Thank you so much for sharing your information. I have a copy of the church record for the marriage between Narciso and Higinia but not Narciso and Sabina. The date for Sabina’s marriage has to be between May 1888 and early 1889 according to the baptism records of the children of Narciso. I also have not been successful in finding death information for Higinia. The marriage date you have for Higinia and Sabina are identical. Could it be that they are the same person? If so, how could it be confirmed? You can contact me personally at kanakalele@aol.com if you’d like to go into more detail. Also, I have pictures of their graves-would this be something to post on this site?

P.S. Are the people you addded part of your tree? If so, does that make us related? I’ve found 2 possibly 3 other relatives through this site!
