Like any search engine it is always best to tailor your search using quote marks. It filters out the junk. While working on my last project I found that my great-great grandfather converted to the Presbyterian religion and was the first church elder in Irwindale, California around 1900. I had found OLD Presbyterian journals in Google books with articles about my g-g grandfather and pictures of the rock church, which still stands to this day.

Google books is always worth a try and if you can’t view the book online, at least you have the book information and try to order it on interlibrary loan through the local county library.
